IMHO it's always good to hear others opinions.

<I am thinking of going into the teaching profession in some way, and would be supportive of teaching both religion and science at schools. >

As with every topic... the issues is "who's religion, and who's science". :)) IMHO the "edge" in truth that science has is that it is flexible and changes over time as truth reveals itself... religion may or may not. There are always curious people challenging the truthfulness of all of science, that's why all theories are a work in progress and are constantly updated. Some Religions are much slower in general and in some cases have no interest or need to follow the truth.

An example of sciences "flexibility" is the topic of this thread: Evolution. There are many different versions of evolution that are acceptable to most biologists since certain parts of current updated theory are constantly and hotely debated.

An example of religions "inflexibility" on the topic are also readily observable in society as typically they use these same hot debates to try and throw the whole idea of evolution out and claim it's all wrong. Their dogma gets in the way of the truth... as often their REAL objective isn't the truth, but to find data that fits their preconceived beliefs (often their version of the meaning of the bible). Interestingly this act is precisely one of the main phenomina that science attempts to watch out for... one of it's reasons for being.

That's what I like about "local" school boards... let 'em teach what they want. If folks don't want their kids taught a certain thing they won't move to that area... companies won't relocate there, etc. No Problem! :))

OTOH, we already have all sorts of schools that do what you want... the religious schools, like Catholic schools.
