They were married for 57 years and without a doubt my mom can count on me / us to bring her through this. She's doing really well - I think she did a lot of her grieving when dad started to fail a couple years ago. When dad was released from the hospital he was in chronic heart and kidney failure. The kidney issue was new and mom didn't know really what that meant. I knew the end wasn't far off (I was thinking within 60 days) but after talking to Carolyn I realized it was probably much sooner. I still didn't tell mom and, as it turns out, dad passed 4 days later.

The day he started dying on July 28th (he officially died at 2:36 am on the 29th) he had no idea but I had read the "dying process" chapter in the hospice book so I knew and called all the siblings so every one was here. Anyhow, I was feeding him and he said "you make my proud to say I'm your father." It killed me but I couldn't let on that I thought he was on his way out. Later that day his condition got worse and I said to my mom "this is it - lets go comfort him." So we went in and held his hand and said "it's ok to go dad - we'll be ok." In his last great act of defiance he opened his eyes and said "I'm not going anywhere." LOL!! Had you heard his tone of voice you'd be chuckling because it was meant as humor. Of course I knew he was wrong but I LOVED the defiance and fight he displayed. That was MY FATHER and couldn't have been more proud!

God better be careful or he might find himself working for my dad :)
