“But there isn’t a more honorable profession than banking,” he said Wednesday to some 400 small business lenders, U.S. Small Business Administration personnel and those who support small business lending at Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in New York.

Wilmers cited statistics that recently, trusting a bank has been an issue among small business owners, and that businesses and banks alike have been “putting money away like crazy.”

“The bank that refuses to lend money is like a factory that refuses to produce goods,” Wilmers said. “Neither will survive for long.”

He said small businesses and the SBA can work together to solve the country’s unemployment problem.

“The nation’s most pressing problem is creating jobs,” Wilmers said, referencing a 9.1 percent unemployment rate in the U.S. “But with the public’s image of banks, we can’t expect business to come to us.”

Wilmers encouraged small businesses to utilize the SBA. M&T is the largest SBA lender in the Baltimore area, and the second-largest bank in the region ranked by market share.

“The SBA is available to help with a myriad of resources and support, and we can start by learning about the 14 different programs within the SBA set,” Wilmers said, urging bankers to partner with SBA to re-build the nation’s economy and workforce. ...
