Posted at 3:10 PM PT, Nov 17, 1997 LAS VEGAS -- Compaq on Monday announced its second stab at the handheld market, the C-Series PC companion, which features a homegrown design and runs Microsoft's Windows CE 2.0 operating system for devices.
Slated to ship during the first half of 1998, the C-Series is designed to be an extension to the desktop or portable PC, as opposed to a replacement, company executives said. The device will give users access to both personal information and corporate data found on their own PCs, company networks, and the Internet, they said.
Designed to get on corporate IT managers approved buying lists, the device includes security, asset management, data synchronization, and remote-access features, officials said. With the C-Series, Compaq is also targeting small and medium business users, and professionals who work at home.
Available in both monochrome and color models, the C-Series will be based on a RISC chip and will include an integrated modem, a touch-screen display with 640 by 240 resolution, two brightness settings on the backlit display, integrated microphone, infrared port, and optimized keyboard, officials said. Links to PCs are made possible with a serial port connection
It will include pocket versions of Microsoft's Outlook, Internet Explorer, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel applications, all of which can be synchronized with copies of the software running on desktop PCs.
Users of Compaq's existing PC companion device, based on a design licensed from Casio, can upgrade to Windows CE 2.0 via user-installable ROM, officials said.
Pricing was not announced.
Also at Comdex,Compaq introduced the 7790DMT, its first Armada portable with a 13.3-inch active-matrix display. Based on Intel's 233-MHz Mobile Pentium chip with MMX, the PC features a 5GB hard drive, integrated 33.6 modem, and 20-speed CD-ROM drive. Slated for release in December, the 7790DMT will be priced at $4999.
With this announcement, Compaq also committed to extending its Build to Order model that it launched for desktop PCs this past summer to its notebook family worldwide.
