"During these economic times, this is just absurd," says Sodus Town Supervisor Steve LeRoy. "New York State is laying people off and we're trying to find money for water, and construction projects. It's ridiculous." LeRoy says the new "Frog Crossing" signs are the result of a new state ordinance by the New York State Parks and Recreation Department. "I just can't imagine anybody stopping their vehichle for a frog," he adds. The signs, much like moose or deer crossing signs, are bright, reflective, attention-grabbing yellow. Hikers near Chimney Bluff State Park were a little perplexed as to why the signs were put in. "It's a little odd, but we're in New York State, you gotta expect these things," said Randy Warbick who was walking with a friend on Monday afternoon. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation indicated Monday it was unclear whether or not any species of frogs in the Wayne County area are endangered--which in Steve LeRoy's opinion--might have warranted the signs. "Obviously our state taxpayers are paying for this."
