Here's a monthly log chart of gold. It allows comparison on more of a percentage basis with previous rallies. stockcharts.com In retrospect, the 2nd half of 2008 just looks like an overdone correction of the previous rally, going through the BB midpoint rather than just to it, i.e. $700 instead of $800.
