The point is that no nation can afford to have a large percentage of unemployed citizens. The USA in particular cannot afford to have a high percentage of unemployed citizens. A part time worker at Walmart who sleeps on the park benches will not be paying much in taxes, and also will be unable to pay much in taxes. When the middle class has gone, so has the tax paying base. Interesting to see what Tim Geithner has to say on the subject.
