Toshiba Intros Second Generation DVD-ROM, Lead Developer of DVD Technology Boasts Proven Reliability and Performance

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Toshiba America Information
Systems Inc., Disk Products Division (TAIS DPD) Monday introduced the SD-M1102
DVD-ROM drive, Toshiba's second generation DVD-ROM drive that builds upon its
predecessor to offer industry-leading performance and reliability.

The new SD-M1102 will be demonstrated at COMDEX/Fall, Las Vegas Convention
Center, No. L1214.

Toshiba has an unparalleled track record in implementing this new technology and
helping OEMs integrate DVD into their systems. "With our first generation DVD-ROM
drive, we addressed all the issues confronting first generation technologies -- firmware,
integration, manufacturability, compatibility, etc." said Maciek Brzeski, director, Optical
Business Unit, TAIS DPD.

Toshiba's new SD-M1102 employs Constant Angular Velocity technology and a 256K
buffer to deliver a fast 2X-max read of DVD media (1350-2700 KB/sec) and a 24X-max
read of CD media (1550-3600KB/sec) and burst data transfer of 16.7MB/sec for
multi-word DMA Mode 2 and PIO mode 4. the SD-M1102 provides a 160ms average
random access for DVD-ROM media and a 105ms average random access fo CD-ROM
media.

The SD-M1102 DVD-ROM drive can read all DVD ROM disc capacities and all types of
data recorded on DVD discs, including movies, music, games and data. With the
appropriate hardware, the drive also supports playback of MPEG-2 video and Dolby
AC-3 Digital Surround Sound audio. The new drive also provides read compatibility
with all CD-based media, including CD-R and CD-RW.

Toshiba's experience with first generation DVD-ROM drives gives Toshiba the edge
over competitive products when it comes to drive reliability. The new SD-M1102
DVD-ROM drive has a 100,000 hour MTTF.

The SD-M1102 DVD-ROM drive has an ATAPI interface and may be mounted
horizontally or vertically.

The SD-M1102 measures 1.7-inch (41.5mm)(h) x 5.8-inch (146mm)(w) x 7.7-inch
(193mm)(l) and weighs 2.2 pounds (.98kg). The drive has an average power consumption
of 7.1 watts.

Toshiba's SD-M1102 DVD-ROM drive is available now in volume quantities. The
suggested list price is $279.
