If it's a he, the porridge bird is not laying very many eggs. Sooo, perhaps the male porridge bird was stealing the porridge from a window sill where it had been placed for cooling. However, before he could get the porridge to his nestlings, he dropped the container from his beak, startling a couple of nearby pedestrians.

As they examined the mess on the ground, one of the pedestrians was given to remark, "That's odd! This bird seems to have laid his egg in the air."

From which the other pedestrian replied as he stooped to stick his finger in it, "You know, this egg looks and rather tastes like porridge!"

"Well, it must be a porridge bird then."

And with that the two pedestrians sauntered off, now having a remarkable story to tell.

And that is how it came to be that the porridge bird lays his eggs in the air.
