Sometimes people don't know they want something until after someone builds it. Like - build it and they will come? It seems that with Intel's R&D budget they could afford to have their fingers on a lot of different pulses and have the engineering completed on "strawman-like" products and if they sense that the competition feels a pulse somewhere, they can be ready to go without being caught off guard (again?).
