The hype over Hurricane Irene is overblown, predicts the CEO of Advanced Forecasting Corporation.

"Hype" is a horrible word to use when discussing hurricanes. They are predictable, and totally unpredictable. Hurricane Charlie was "UN-hyped" and went from a Cat 2 to a Cat 4 in three hours, then made a almost 90 degree turn into land, all unpredicted or "UN-hyped". People died.

Using the word hype with any hurricane leaves folks an opening to their strong temptation to dismiss and not prepare for any future hurricanes, until it's too late.

The reason Irene got so much press is because it's headed for NYC. Anything that happens to the folks in NYC is more important than anything that happens to us provincials, according to the press.

But using the word "hype" IMHO is irresponsible. But by a fluke of an incredibly complex chaotic system that is our weather it could have been a killer. Nobody knew.
