I think the truth about real estate from the point of view of both the economy and real people is that asset appreciation in home prices offered the allure of being better off -- a false allure to be sure. The deeper issue is how can we be better off? Not by overpriced housing. The politics of all of this is straight forward -- the Tea Party and similar political groups want to wipe out the middle class. They opine that the foundations of an advanced industrial economy must be wiped out to 'save us' from government. They appeal to people based on the idea that they can make people better off when it is exactly the opposite -- they would wipe us out economically.

Imagine a political movement that believes that the infrastructure of a modern economy must be wiped out in the name of creating a better future. It would be like building a house and trying to save money by having no foundation.

There is tremendous waste in America -- in our legal system, our criminal justice system, and in our penchant for spending ourselves into bankruptcy on phony 'defense' that does nothing to make us or the rest of the world safer or better off. There is gross overfunding of defense and gross underfunding of education and other long lived assets that for a time propelled America to the head of the pack but which are rapidly falling apart for lack of support.

The Tea Party and similar groups are the dumbing down of America and serve the interests of people who believe that a tiny number of extremely wealthy people and extremely powerful corporate interests -- both financial and military -- should be allowed to make the entire system serve them instead of the vast majority of Americans. The Tea Party is selling poison in a pink bottle with a pretty ribbon on it. If they succeed, our children will never know the prosperity that was once the pride of America.
