Bob: I've been doing a little looking of late in energy. FWIW I have a few names to kick around and some brief simple reasoning. I own none of names I will mention here at this time, but they interest me. Also with the inclination that picking companies based on their merger prospects is unlikely to yield near term realization. All IMO have current speculative appeal for holding long term if you believe in NG as a growing fuel source. In Devons case, both oil and gas. I think many of the pure NG plays are over priced, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Most here are already familiar with regular names that pop up from time to time. Usually just after a company like a Petrohawk, Atlas, or XTO goes down. I rarely buy a company in the limelight based solely on near term speculative appeal (rumors). However Carrizo OIL looks interesting based on past rumors.

I know it's not a pure play , but my favorite (just looking) target right now is Devon energy. For one thing it has scale in oil and NG. That's what I think big oil is looking for. It would take a tremendous amount of money or issued stock to acquire it. IMO-Originally even though I don't think the FTC should have allowed it to take place. I think the Exxon/Mobil merger is one of the most successful mergers of scale of all time. Might be a good target for France's Total, Royal Dutch Shell, a US based Chevron or Exxon/Mobil.

Natioinal Fuel Gas - Again not a pure play in NG. Both more into Utility, transport and storage of NG. I think that's where we might see some action. That based on the recent actions of Williams. There will be a looser in that battle of Southern Union. I also believe a foreign company like Iberdrola or a domestic Dominion Resource would be interested in expanding in this area. A little kicker, NFG has some NG exploration activities and some potential in Marcellus Shale.

BTW-I do own ECA and they recently announced they are looking to sell some of their Barnett Shale holdings. Witch I believe were acquired through their Tom Brown acquisition many years ago. Tom Brown, a name I remember from my earlier investing years. When oil was enjoying a resurgence after a long period of calm.
