The story didn't get bigger ... it was a story of resurrection from the earliest time we have the story recorded which was only a few years after it happened.

The Romans actually tried to suppress the story for almost 300 years and by the time they stopped the story was set.

There's no reason to think any part of the story of Jesus was fabricated ... it goes back to the first century to the time when the people spreading the story were willing to sacrifice their lives for it.
