Had the 1st bomb been dropped on Tokyo, I doubt a 2nd would ever have been needed.

But then again, most of Tokyo had already been destroyed by massive firebombing, so who knows?

Discussing the necessity of the 2nd nuke on Japan is kind of similar to discussing the necessity of the destruction of Dresden in February, 1945.

Dresden was very much like Hiroshima - with the difference that the blast lasted a lot longer...

Harris ordered that bombing after getting a reconfirmed nod from Churchill himself.
