Hi Wharfie ..

Yep .. Still here ..

Started raining about 8:00 PM Saturday night ..
Squally as the initial rain bands came thru with gusts in the 20-30 mph range ..
After midnight we had a pretty near constant rain with 25-35 mph consistent breezes ..
Lost power at about 2:15 am .. winds increasing to 35-40+ mph ..
Weak branches/leaves falling .. trees swaying .. Some "green" lightning as
the squalls came thru ( might also have been electrical transformers blowing up )
Power came back on ( amazingly !! ) at about 4:30 am .. Winds increasing to
40-50 mph .. weakened trees and larger limbs up to 6" diameter started popping/snapping
Maintained storm strength at above levels until about 8:00 am when the "core" of the
storm passed nearly overhead ( Norwalk-Westport CT ) at which point winds were a constant
50+ mph with gusts 60+ mph ( Maximum gust in Bridgeport ( about 15 miles east of me ) was
reported as 63 mph ) .. These conditions ( with near constant rain ) lasted for about two hours
at which point ( 10:00 am ) the wind abruptly started "backing" to the west and eventually NW
( off the land now ) .. The rain tapered off after noon on Sunday and even though the wind was still
blowing in 30-40 mph range it was safe to go out and survey the neighborhood .. Expected minor
flooding in low lying areas ( our "surge" was about 3-4 feet above normal high tide ) which was enough
to cause some flooding in low lying homes and businesses located on rivers and estuaries ..
Water levels with proper drainage were back to near normal after 4:00 PM .. Numerous widespread
power outages and much more severe flooding in inland areas that got 10+ inches of rain in 12
hours or less .. Worst hit flood areas are in NJ and VT .. More weakened trees came down late
yesterday afternoon once the wind direction had switched to the NW and I'd guess we had a few
gusts in the +50 mph range at that time under clear skies .. Was able to drive my daughter to work
in Manhattan this am with no problems on the roads though the trains ( Metro North ) are still
out of service for equipment/track checks prior to resuming normal schedules tomorrow ..
Spent the rest of the day clearing the yard of tree limbs/branches/leaves etc .. IRENE's proximity
to the NJ coast as she came NE to us and the fact that the "core" had to cross Long Island first
meant that we were fortunate to experience a weakening strong tropical storm upon arrival
at our location ( thankfully !! ) .. BTW our rain total here was 4+ inches ..

Triff ..
