derivatives are an issue which has not been resolved. a market clearing mechanism was to be set up as part of some reform law or other, but if any progress has been made, it would be news to me. the overarching issue is amorphous and not easily solved: the role of finance has grown beyond its traditional role of facilitating the creation and transfer and ultimate use of capital in productive enterprises. it is a game to itself now, a sign of a decaying society, IMO. it is also powerful politically in ways we should not countenance.
