IMPORTANT THREAD ANNOUNCEMENT:

A final note here tonight. Some of you may have seen me post elsewhere that starting next week, I will be in Czech language class most of the day in preparation for my wife's assignment to the US Embassy in Prague next summer. This will be the first time since I left government service myself in 2000 that I won't have unlimited time to monitor SI all day.

My limited time online in the late afternoon and evening will have to be devoted primarily to my investment business and relevant threads. As a result, I am passing on the stewardship of this thread to one of its longtime regulars, Epicure. She will have free reign to set the thread TOU and banning policy as she sees fit.

After six years of building a successful thread here, I am happy to see it pass on to other hands and maybe go through new iterations down the line. I will continue to skim the thread for the posters who interest me and post the occasional item or column of interest. But frankly, most of the ideological pattycake that passes for political debate on SI isn't worth bothering with. Vehement repetitions of fixed ideological stands based on ill-informed, uninformed or often completely made up "facts" is not debate, it's just an exercise in self-indulgent performance art.

So I will leave you all to it. This thread accomplished many of the things I set out to do in 2005, and I met some great people along the way. I look forward to playing a role in this little corner of SI, on a reduced scale now.
