RE: IRENE flooding ..

This is an ongoing under reported crisis in NJ .. upstate NY .. VT .. MA .. ME ..
We don't get many "landfalling" tropical systems in southern New England ..
Most are usually pushed off to the east as early fall cold fronts coming
from the west typically deflect those storms offshore and they're generally
moving fast ( ie greater than 20 knots forward speed ) .. So, IRENE was
unusual on two counts .. The fact that the center of circulation made landfall
where it did ( Western end of Long Island ) and the fact that it was relatively
slow moving when it got to our latitude .. Interior sections of New England
are riddled with numerous small rivers and streams that just can't handle the
volume of precipitation that was received as IRENE proceeded inland and
rained herself out .. The larger rivers aren't expected to crest until later in the
week, so the coastal regions along the river mouths may get flooded out again ..
this time from the land rather than the ocean ..
