To argue against equivalency of those two examples, is it reasonable to distinguish between a for-profit corporation set up for the express purpose of accumulating wealth and an association of people set up explicitly not for profit, but for the express purpose of advocacy?

It seems like corporations were conceived to protect property, not speech.
