I am not sure that was possible. The mistake was in the management of expectations. He had enough good will to "manage expectations".

Bush left us in terrible shape. We were on the precipice of a global catastrophe. We had to stop the bleeding and the recovery was going to be long and painful.

When you come down to it, "managing expectations" is what life is all about.
