Tokyo Stks Open Lower After PM Denies Public Funds Remark

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Tokyo shares are sharply lower in
early trade Wednesday after Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto
said late Tuesday that he didn't suggest earlier that the
government would use public funds to aid the banking system.

The market is falling on arbitrage sales as the December
Nikkei 225 futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange closed
at a sharp discount to their finish in Osaka. December
futures were on sell indication at 16,550.00 around 0012 GMT
(7:12 p.m. EST Tuesday), compared with a close of 16,790 in
Osaka Tuesday.

"The market will give back all of Tuesday's gains," said
Yoshio Watanabe, a manager at the derivatives section of Toyo
Securities. Watanabe said the Nikkei could drop to as low as
16,200 Wednesday.
