American individualism is deeply ingrained Agree... but at this juncture it appears to be a weakness.. individualism for individualism sake.. serves no purpose IMO... I guess it's like the dead lion / live dog parable... no right answer...

When I was a kid vacationing in the US (annual pilgrimage)... Neil's song was much more relevant.. but as yet unwritten .. I knew first hand too why Rosa Parks was a big deal :O) the issues were a lot more current than 1860... of course it was 'better' up here.. but really we had 'Black' towns

Settlements

As racism was rampant when the first groups of black people came to Nova Scotia, many all-black communities, villages and towns were set up. Most of these communities were located in a rural setting, and were usually very independent until the 1960s when some inner-city neighbourhoods were set up, starting with the demolition of Africville.

Some of the settlements include: East Preston, Cherrybrook, Lincolnville, Upper Big Tracadie, Uniacke Square, North Preston, Mulgrave Park, Tracadie, Shelburne, Beechville and several others.

Interesting place Tracadie (been there... my hope is to live a version of Johnny Cash's classic ride this train, a staple in our home growing up).. Acadians (French that escaped the British expulsion) Some are Louisianan antecedents :O) at any rate French and Blacks got what the British didn't want..
