The Pinto's problem was poor engineering. When rear ended the gas tank would sometimes rupture and ignite. It was the result of Ford rushing to meet competition from high mileage foreign imports during the energy crisis in the mid 70's. I can still remember the long lines to get gas back then. I drove a gas guzzling '70 Nova 350 cu. inch with a 4-speed. lol
