OK--I'm kinda conditioned by the history of mines in the USA between 1880 and 1920 and the struggle of the United Mine Workers and all the shootings etc it took before mine owners finally "got it", but glad to hear it is a different story today.

There is definitely a roll reversal nowadays. I'll try to dig up the reports of shootings and other violent activities by striking miners.

The only exception to the non-union mines that contradicts what I have been saying is for Massey owned mines. There is definitely an unhealthy culture there that starts at the top. I have felt as unsafe in those non-union mines as I have in many of the union mines. And the miners definitely didn't seem as happy. (as opposed to other mines where you can tell that mining is in their blood).
