totally false, and i bet you can't back that up with any documentation. you just made that one up.

Tariffs are the traditional method. Free trade the new idea. Conservatism is to conserve traditional policies and methods, so free trade is the newer liberal method. Or did you not know the meaning of conservatism.

free trade has nothing to do with 'being good to each other'. it has to do with self-interest. you do what will benefit YOU. and generally in that process, you inadvertently benefit the one you're trading with.

Free trade is a policy of reduced tariffs. It is not a policy of doing nothing as you suggest.

let them lay tariffs on us! they hurt themselves more than they hurt us. after a while, they would see it as useless and give it up. would you go beat up a kid who didn't want to trade his mickey mantle card to you, or wanted too much for it?

Countries have survived in isolation for many many years. I doubt we could do as well with no exports and dependant on imports.

talk about fairy tales! what does this have to do with free trade??

Not using tariffs especially without an agreement is akin to walking in a bad neighbor hood with your wallet stuck to your back. Tariffs are a very good and necessary form of protection

of course! no one would be foolish enough to do such a thing.

Exactly! Yet you propose to do just that by not imposing tariffs with countries who will not abide to free trade.

an income tax taxes income. a sales tax taxes consumption. they are not the same thing. they're quite different. and since everyone has a stake in government, nearly everyone should have to pay a tax for it.

Everybody does not nor should not have a stake in government, rather the government has a stake in us, we should be free but instead we now live in a totalitarian government. A tax on income allows the government to tax everybody and rake in too much money which they use to control us. Swapping that for a national sales tax simply does essentially the same thing. Instead of a tax on everybody it is a tax on everything.

if you want limited government make it (the tax) transparent so nothing is hidden, and have everyone feel the sting when their is money taken.

A national sales tax won't do that. The government will simply exempt certain class's of people from the sales tax.
