The slope is not negative because price elasticity has resulted in huge gains in unit volume or huge gains in bits.

Some posters like Mr. woody still have a hard time to figure out what "Moore's Law" means - amazing
I remember Toshiba laptop (486) would sell for $ 4500 about 20 years ago - and so the performance of this laptop doubled every 18 months for the last 20 years or so - obviously a $ 600 laptop would attract more buyers - far more buyers relative to $ 6000 - that's where the term elasticity becomes relevant - not even counting for increased performance.
I can't think of any other industry / product that leverages price elasticity while reducing cost like clock work.
It's very unique and it's completely against the "grain" of "economics".
BTW wafer size conversion occurred prior to 1990 and the pace of wafer size conversion is actually slowing -
die size shrinks are a "constant" and so is change in wafer size more or less when looking at G's chart
