Actually it was the other way around. The early Fords could do pretty well on rutted and muddy roads. But when it got to where a car could go 35 mph, and as more people got cars, governments were called on to build hard-surface all-weather roads. When my grandfather bought his first Ford there wasn't a single paved road in the entire county, except downtown at the county seat. He was so used to using a horse and giving it his leftover apple cores that he absentmindedly stuck his hand out behind him while he was talking to someone after making a house call and being given an apple to eat. Turned around to see why the horse hadn't taken the core and realized he had tried to feed it to his car.
