As a veteran of your problem and I can heartily recommend taking the surgical route to "cleaning up" the rupture (if that is your diagnosis). Oh, sure, you might get some relief with steroids, pain killers and muscle relaxants but, the permanent solution is what us older folks need. Those discs don't just heal on their own and while they are distended, they place undue pressure on a nerve which causes inflammation which, in turn, causes pain. You could be lucky and it might be treatable with minimally invasive techniques. It's possible that it could be just a day stay. Or, it could require a larger incision if stenosis or more than one disc is also involved. Also, get a second opinion. If you're not dealing with a top flight orthopod or, if the radiologist doesn't "read" well, you could get a mis-diagnosis. When it comes to your back, there should be no short cutting. |
