As that wise sage Alan Greenspan KBE explained, he presumed shareholders and management of the likes of Lehman would protect their own investments. <NO ONE ON WS PUTS HIS OWN MONEY AT RISK >. Were you unaware that Lehman had shareholders and a balance sheet with assets on their balance sheet and that those assets were in part the property of the shareholders. The shareholders lost their money. The remnants of the company were bought by Barclays.

It is the responsibility of shareholders to ensure they hire good managers who will do a good job. Their punishment for hiring people who do things badly is to lose their investment. They were punished.
