...Despite the weakness in DRAM, Chairman and Chief Executive Steve Appleton Appleton said Micron has one of the strongest balance sheets in the memory industry and is well positioned to take advantage of rising demand for flash memory, which is used in smartphones and tablets. He said the percentage of revenue Micron derives from flash surpassed DRAM for first time in the current quarter.

Meanwhile, Appleton said Micron is confident in its strong patent portfolio, noting he has looked at the recent "IP frenzy with a little bit of interest but also some amusement." Giants such as Google Inc. (GOOG) and Apple Inc. (AAPL) have been buoying their patent portfolios of late, giving them an edge to defend themselves from litigation. Meanwhile, Durcan reiterated capital spending should total about $2 billion in fiscal 2012, down from $2.9 billion in the current fiscal year....
