So if it was only a hypothetical 1% of the climate scientists that participated in climate gate it wouldn't matter to you because this one percent has the ability to taint the rest of climate scientists?

What percentage of a corporation is the CEO and upper management? 1%? But their participation in a scandal matters even if the rest of the corporation is innocent, wouldn't you say? Their participation could easily taint the whole corporation, wouldn't you say?

Jones, Mann, Trenbenth, et. al. were leaders in the field. They were exposed conspiring to prevent skeptics from publishing. Publishing is the life-blood of an academic career - publish or perish, that's the motto for the untenured professor. When you corrupt peer-review, you have corrupted the whole field, by definition.
