8 hours a day, 5 days a week, is for government workers, some union workers and office support staff. People who punch a time clock, and leave the job without concern for whether it was done right. Entrepreneurs, business owners and professionals work much longer hours in the US.

I work minimum 45 hours, typical 50, maximum 60, at which point I have reached the point of diminishing returns, but I am not young. When I was young, 60 hours was easy. I don't get overtime but you do what you need to do to get the job done right. I don't go home when there are things left undone.

Many of my clients are union workers who will gladly work 48 hour workweeks if given the opportunity. The extra 8 hours at time and a half. They love that overtime. They depend on it. For many of them, the loss of overtime has put them into bankruptcy.

Small business owners work a lot more than 60 hours. They could not survive if they only worked 40 hours a week.
