I guess you don't need to know the industry in order to buy calls. All you really need to do is look at earnings and margins. And, of course, you also have to hope that someone buys the company (and those thingies that it makes and sells).

Seriously though, it is quite common for well managed companies with good long term prospects to make a few mistakes along the way to greatness. But in order to recognize these situations, you might have to get to know the business.
