For the third year in a row, the network computer is the talk of Comdex. But this time, it's Microsoft's version that's grabbing the attention at the huge computer trade show here.

...Sun Microsystems had planned to set up a booth to showcase its own network computer and other Java-compatible machines. But it had to cancel those plans because no other companies signed up for the booth.

The only Java network computers on the floor were shown by IBM and Corel Computer, a Canadian firm. Both cost around $1,000 without a monitor and keyboard.

Regardless of who wins the battle to control the standard, some experts think network computers eventually could be ubiquitous.

''Net computers will be a pervasive, key element in everyone's lives,'' said Frank Dzubeck, president of Communications Network Architects.
