Much like depression.I had a friend who was a neurologist(also was a helicopter gunner in Vietnam) who had significant depression.Another neurologist ,the head of the program came up to me one day and said "you know the difference between us and him is he sees life on a realistic basis and cant deny that life sucks and we dont" A lot of truth in that statement but a lot depends on your world view.We all go around denying our own (and our kids) mortality and quickly block it out should it come up.Those with depression frequently can not do this. They live with their future pains in front of their eyes (psychotic depressed mothers who kill their kids tend to do it to protect the kids from the pains of life)Where I disagree is that if you have faith in God it changes your very world view and allows even those who can not deny their mortality to be less depressed. If you dont have some faith you better have even more unrealistic expectations about life to survive
