Eric, The MIGS are made for rough ground runways, and since they had no good air radar and were ground guided to target they had no electronics bays to get broken and not run. They are a simpler plane. However they intentionally sacrifice engine life for power/weight ratio. US plane engines are far more reliable, and so save on maintenance. The USSR did not count labor, it was free, and so they went for higher power to weight, and more planes(a commone strategy for them, make many and waste them)
This also showed up in Soviet tanks which had a service life of 50 miles before a breakdown of some sort. But they had thousand of them. They were taken to battle on tank transporters. Tank for tank the German tanks were superior.
