CONSUMER: Good point - if you disregard the fact we are and have been subsidizing our energy consumption from overseas which has ruined our balance of trade. Most of this has been via subsidizing dictators with money or even US blood.

Better for us to get to self sufficiency that to be caught again in another Arab Oil Embargo at an even worse time.

Our economy runs on oil - that's a strategic fact.

PRODUCER: if there ARE tech breakthroughs in energy, say room temperature superconductors, its gonna be way better for the US to lead the tech than it is to be beholden to the Chinese like we are currently to the Saudi's.
