Good point - if you disregard the fact we are and have been subsidizing our energy consumption from overseas which has ruined our balance of trade. Most of this has been via subsidizing dictators with money or even US blood.

I was going to put strategic interests as a reason to push renewables. However, as I was about to write it, I reconsidered. I absolutely believe that reducing our usage of oil is a matter of national security...but pushing solar and wind isnt really accomplishing the objective. For the most part, renewable energy is going to replace coal, natural gas, and nuclear.

If our goal is to reduce our dependence on oil, we should tax the hell out of gasoline. I guess if you wanted to push it from the consumer angle you could push tax credits for hybrid/electric vehicles.

if there ARE tech breakthroughs in energy, say room temperature superconductors, its gonna be way better for the US to lead the tech than it is to be beholden to the Chinese like we are currently to the Saudi's.

FWIW, I agreed with your point about pushing basic research. The article I referenced also talked about the fact that seed capital is readily available in the US.
