I think we all agree here that electricity the only viable replacement for oil.

The strongest in the market place, which means the cheapest watts should win. Unfortunately that's a tough measurement to make. There are a lot of variables that are hard to take into account, as mentioned latitude when one is measuring solar. Consumers should sort that one out.

The grid is a biggie too. Kind of impossible to have a grid that is not government run or organized in some way. The grid is one virtual giant battery, or could be.

I think it is in some ways a reasonable short term response. As I've mentioned I think the below market leases of BLM land are sneakily good. Direct subsidization of companies is a bad idea long term though.

But long term I've long been an advocate of POURING money into basic research. We need the equivalent of a man on the moon commitment. We could do it, I think its totally feasible.

Sadly I don't think our leaders really give a crap. Its not in their nature to think much past 2, 4 or 6 years, and the people who give them the money they need to get re-elected... are not our best thinkers.

Anyway this forum is all about money, we are here to learn to invest so speculation about what should be is really moot.

The reality is we are going to lose most of it to the Chinese. I have little doubt of that. There is still money to be made but really buying into a utility is almost better than solar right now. UNLESS there is an energy disruption.
