No doubt if oil were limitless we would not need a viable alternative. Alternative doesn't mean it will replace oil immediately. Gasoline is great because it contains so much brute energy, but obviously its getting rather expensive.

True about jets, they need brute force to get off the ground. I would imagine this mode of transportation is going to be very expensive in the future, maybe clearing the way for high speed rail?

However Azimuth thrusters are getting popular with tankers and container shipping

mostly driven by diesel electrical generators. AMSC makes electrical (armature) engines for these. This is an application were small and powerful makes sense. Might be an application where nuclear works better.

Of course I was mostly referring to automobiles and trucks. Hard to imagine steam engines getting traction but who knows? Microwaves?

AMSC has always been a story stock, albeit with a great story. They were doing pretty well selling armatures and software to China's Sinoval for wind generators which betrayed them, stopped payment ended their contract and stole their proprietary knowledge. Currently trading at a p/e of 6.18 according to Yahoo. There is always the possibility that their primary research into superconductors will yield the holy grail someday - room temperature superconducting.

Perhaps I'm wrong about the consensus, but I don't think so.
