Clearwire, Sprint, and cable companies are not alone in forging 'quad play' partnerships that combine fiber optic, cable, and wireless broadband networks to deliver advanced services.

Tele2, and Dutch cablecos, Liberty Global's UPC and Ziggo have previously partnered on 2.6GHz spectrum which is used as part of a quadruple-play joint wired-wireless service offering.

Tele2 has applied for 800MHz spectrum which will be used in a multiple-carrier LTE network. The lower frequency spectrum can enhance the range and building penetration of the wireless service compared to a single carrier 2.6GHz network.

The progress that Tele2 is making in developing multiple carrier LTE in conjunction with cable partners should help encourage Clearwire's US partners, Comcast, Brighthouse and Time Warner and perhaps COX to more fully fund the company's plans to build out TD-LTE.
