Perhaps I was more fortunate. I told my management what software I needed to do my work, they bought it, and they received enormous benefit from my work with this software.

As far as who owns what is on a disk drive - consider this. When you enter your work place, are the thoughts in your brain the property of your employer? Remember - you are on company time and on company property. Do they OWN your thoughts which are your personal memory contents while they are paying your salary? Isn't this analogous to the contents of files on a disk drive?
