The problem with expansion to rural areas comes down to spectrum.. the right spectrum. The easiest way to understand where Clearwire fits is to look at 3GPP, GSM, independent research reports, supplier white papers, and Sprint's outline for Network Vision:

What these show is that the way to build out 4G LTE is to build networks that use a low frequency band like 800MHz (Nextel) for wide coverage, mid frequency band like EVDO for mid-range and density BB, and high frequencies band for the heavy lifting high population/sub density ie. Clearwire 2.6GHz .

Clearwire sucks as a stand alone pariah. They can rock as "Broadband King - Have it Your Way!" ... the Switzerland of BB that wants to do business with anyone who has money and wants neutral access to the common bank.

Clearwire's annula report should be read by every investor.. it compiles previous SEC docs in a rather lame way but it shows a lot of information about the situation and how the company thinks. I have not agreed with Clearwire and despite recent favorable moves still think that they may be overly reactive about alternative spectrum players including LightSquared and DISH. The reality is that Clearwire does not control the bleating world of wireless. They have to take it as it comes and own up to their role in the big picture. And that fundamentally is to be the plug-and-play BB bank that work WITH other spectrum and not as the stand alone.

Its abundantly, mind warpingly clear that the market of operators has not bought the "Have it our way or the highway" proclivity of Clearlywired one spectrum is all. Management has taken steps to get off of that dead horse and move on. Doing a ride-sharing deal with China Mobile is a big step. Doing more deals that parlay that into Clearwire being more than the hand maiden of Sprint would be a monumental set of developments. Baring that, Clearwire will go into play as the hand maiden of Sprint that is essential to their long term strategy... Sprint will not thrive without Clearwire.. they are a dead middle ground without the differentiation of offering higher bandwidth than the more able, prolific top two competitors.
