Nice easy looking country. Most of the places I went in the Yukon you could walk around in street shoes. It isn't like southern BC or the coast where it is very rugged ground. ("Big country") The stories of the old timers were horror stories because they were not used to winter conditions or bush. They were city boys and they all followed the same trail which became rough after 20,000 people had slogged with horses. If they had got off the main trail and trecked in cutting their way, with dog teams, it would have been easier.

Who is into going up there and starting a placer mine?

I will bet those hills have never been tested. People probably just work the river valleys. They forget the hills are sites of very old rivers.

You can work a placer mine year round, even do the washing in the winter iffen you know how to operate. The reason people don't do that is their head is stuck in 100 year old paradigms and prejudice. There are stories of year round placer mines in modern times. There is a secret to it, but I won't tell you as it would spoil the fun.
