Valdez Creek, a placer mine was operated by Cambior for 12 years in Alaska near the ocean, 365 days per year. It had high grade, was near the ocean so temperatures were moderated, and did not have had permafrost at the Denali Mine site.

You can drill in the basin and some areas of the NWT during the winter. The old timers worked in Dawson city during the winter. So drilling is possible. The excuse for not doing it these days is the drills are heli supplied, so it is dangerous for their supply train to work in the short winter days and in fog, which predominates there. If there is an injury on the drills it may be impossible to fly the person out often. This would be the case in much of Northern Ontario as well where there are no roads, but the flying window is wider considering light availability in N.O.

If this were the 40's to 80's they would supply the drills by winter road by caterpillar. Slow but sure, and affordable. This is sometimes difficult in the Yukon in the hills, but I don't think impossible. It depends on distance. where winter road can be banged in as they did for Lupin in the NWT you can only get in by road in the winter. Summer is fly in time. The winter roads can take pick ups, and other trucks with ease where you cannot even walk in the summer. The lack of winter roads during non freeze conditions in the NWT hampered diamond exploration a lot on the last two decades. It would seem that global warming is a reality from that perspective.
