The Oil Sands does pay Canada's debt. It keeps the bankrupt provinces like BC afloat.

There is not much car manufacturing or woods harvesting going on. Mining in Canada, especially gold mining is a has been industry. In 1979 mining and related industries employed 11 percent of all workers and paid 38 percent of our foreign exchange. Politicians didn't like that so they did everything they could to kill it. I don't see they replaced it with anything that matters.

It is high time western governments realized they are not the only industry in their countries and they cannot afford to pay the bills. The taxpayer never could afford such borrow largesse. It must mean that we have to reduce the size of government drastically.

The Canadian ideal is the government is a partner in every profitable business. They don't spend a sou but they take all the profits. Then they run out of money hiring their nephews, so the raise taxes and borrow. When they can't pay the debts, they plunge the country into depression and austerity and blame the non productive worker, who can't get a job because the government makes investment in industry unprofitable by regulations and taxes. but, hey! We are living in a free country. No debt free, or legally free, but free of having too much opportunity to do eff all.

Whenever governmentalists are told Canada sucks, they compare the number of flush telephones and self closing screen doors to the stats in Upper Volta.
