TARP watchdog: Banks inconsistently exited from government support in a rush

By Peter Schroeder - 09/30/11

Federal regulators allowed bailed out banks to exit federal support on weaker footing than originally required and on an "ad hoc and inconsistent" basis, according to a new report from the government's official bailout watchdog.

Furthermore, while banks pressured regulators for an early exit in a rush to avoid bailout stigma and restrictions on executive pay, the Treasury Department actually encouraged banks in that effort, according to the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP).
