That is because your compassion does not in the long run help those who you want to help, but it does absolve your guilt.

I think compassion and guilt are two different things. The human species has done well because we have compassion.

Compassion involves empthy and is feeling badly when others are suffering or an injustice being committed, e.g. a man or animal being mistreated or injured, e.g. slavery, segregation, children working in sweatshops. old people without money or disabled,,etc.

Guilt is feeling badly when the person does something they should not do.

I feel compassion for people who have no compassion-lol. I do not feel guilty though.
