Presidential debates aren't ordinary talking. They are trying to put together pithy, effective parries and attacks under extreme pressure, while remembering 17 contradictory pieces of advice from your handlers, in the knowledge that one wrong word can sink you. It's a very peculiar kind of ballgame.

That's why you heard of Bush, and hear of Perry, that's he's wonderfully articulate in smaller groups. Perry can even give a good speech. But we'll have to wait and see if he can learn to debate on the Presidential

Interesting point, and it leaves me wondering if this debating talent, while being in many ways admirable, is really so crucial for a future President. Could it be that we are electing an intellectual fencing champion?

Another thing that I find interesting is how to explain Romney's continuing failure to connect with the voters, to have himself accepted. Someone once quipped that Romney looks like the guy who fired you. Could be that we intuitively resist having a CEO in lieu of a leader. The business of business is different from the business of government.
